Report on the Profile of Substance Abusers from Selected States of Northeast India: Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur And Mizoram (2003)

Report on Substance Abusers in Northeast IndiaThis report is a publication of North East India HIV/AIDS Network (NEIHAN). INGON was one of the 13 organisations who participated in conducting this study in Meghalaya.

The goals of the study were to identify the socio-economic status of those involved in drug use, to understand the role of law enforcement agencies, to identify the most commonly used drugs and to determine the risk of HIV/ AIDS.

By using the stratified random sampling method, 865 respondents were identified and interviewed using a 48-question schedule.The study revealed that the extent of drugs, alcoholism, STDs and HIV/AIDS also reached tribal and rural areas.

The results of the research were presented to the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society; this study has also led to further research opportunities undertaken by academic institutions.
